Presidents and First Ladies “Our Major Presidents” Monroe and McKinley
Best known for the Monroe Doctrine, Revolutionary soldier, James Monroe served as Secretary of State and Secretary of War before becoming President. Although Elizabeth Monroe had difficulty with her “image” as the First Lady, she was well known for performing one of the most courageous deeds ever attributed to a female of the era, saving the life of the wife of the Marquis de Lafayette from the guillotine.
Meet William and Ida McKinley, the Civil War Hero and the belle of the town, destined to become a much beloved President and First Lady. Their early idyllic life turned tragic with the death of their two young children which left Ida in a fragile state. Admired for the tender adoration of his wife, this reluctant Commander-in-Chief led the country to victory in the Spanish American War. |

Film Series: Freedom - A History of US
Dr. Mark Herman – Professor of History at Edison College - will lead a four week film viewing and discussion series. This evening will screen the following episodes:

Depression and War: The 1930s and 1940s tried the strength and spirit of America’s citizens, as they struggled through the Great Depression and a grueling global ordeal of World War II under the leadership of

Scott Sanchez Classical Jazz Concert
Classical Guitarist, Scott Sanchez will be performing a classical guitar concert at South County Regional Library. Visit his web site at http://www.scottsanchez.com.
The varied program will feature music from North and South America by composers such as Astor Piazzola, Dave Brubeck, Scott Joplin and Agustin Barrios. Also featured on the program will be works from European composers. The performance is sponsored by the South County Regional Library, and admission is open to the public free of charge.
American born guitarist Scott Sanchez is often recognized by audience members, concert presenters and reviewers for his artistry and solid musicianship. The British magazine Classical Guitar, in a review of Mr. Sanchez’s British debut said, “Sanchez drew the audience into his playing with his excellent performance… a performance which at times was introspective and at others extrovert.” Some of the highlights of Mr. Sanchez’s past concert seasons have included recitals for London’s St. Bride’s Church; Dorset, England’s Bournemouth University; Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center; and California’s Ventura Classical Guitar Society. Mr. Sanchez currently has three cds to his credit on the INTRASPECT label. He graduated with a Master’s of Music degree from Yale University where he was a student of the American classical guitarist, Benjamin Verdery. He earned his Bachelor’s of Music degree at the University of Denver as a student of the Cuban classical guitarist, Ricardo Iznaola. Scott currently resides in Massachusetts, and is on the faculty of the Music Department at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire.

Janina Birtolo brings to life “The Divine Sarah” Bernhardt, a legendary actress renowned for her golden voice and ability to fully inhabit the roles she played. Bernhardt moved beyond the stilted, artificial portrayals common in theater at the end of the 19th century and brought a more realistic drama to the stage. A true diva and perhaps the first international superstar, she portrayed larger than life characters and was well known for tackling the role of Hamlet. |
